Prediction of Students’ Academic Performance Using Machine Learning: The Case of Wachemo University

Title: Prediction of Students’ Academic Performance Using Machine Learning: The Case of Wachemo University
Authors: Asefa, Girma, FikaduWayesa
Abstract: An educational institution must always have an estimated previous knowledge of enrolled students to predict their performance in future academics. The comparative analysis of results helped the weaker students to improve their passing which has eventually led to increased overall passing average of the course. In this research, the data was analyzed using classification models with mixing the internal and external data sources, and then compared the model to select the best prediction model that produced highest accuracy, which helped the university to identify the students likely to fail, and work on their academics accordingly in order to achieve better results. Accuracy of this classification algorithm is compared in order to check best performance. K-NN achieved the best prediction results, which are very satisfactory compared to those of similar approaches in both classification.

Analysis and Evaluation of Distance Learning Students’ Performance using MATLAB Fuzzy Logic Tool in Ethiopia

Title: Analysis and Evaluation of Distance Learning Students’ Performance using MATLAB Fuzzy Logic Tool in Ethiopia
Authors: KumarMaitra , Sumit, Matheows Lolamo
Abstract: Nowadays, students are learning and developing their skills through internet by using
educational videos and e-books which are very relevant in enhancing their learning skills,
especially those who are working professionals and they have no time to join regular classes.
In developing countries like Ethiopia, the trend of distance learning is very much increasing
with the help of the internet. Students enroll in institutes of distance education mode, and
expect things like knowledge sharing, teaching learning process, and more awareness in their
favor from the institute. There are seven factors: Homework, Quiz, Middle Examination,
Final Examination, Video lessons, Read E- books, and Virtual Class Attendance that very
much affect distance learning. In this paper we will analyze and evaluate the distance
learning students’ performance in Ethiopia. The paper presents the analysis and simulation
with Fuzzy rules using Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) MATLAB tool to measure students
educational performance accurately. We gathered the data of students and used seven
parameters which enhance accuracy, flexibility and credibility as compared to using only one
limited parameter. At last, results are validated by using Fuzzy Inference System with
MATLAB Fuzzy tool

Facebook Usage Experience of Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) Students in Jimma University

Title: Facebook Usage Experience of Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) Students in Jimma University
Authors: Mulat, Yared
Abstract: This research intended to explore and describe the Facebook usage experience of
Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) students in the context of Jimma University. The
study mainly relied on in-depth interview with participants of the study complemented by
essay report in order to collect data. Transcendental research design was used. The prime
motive behind this decision was that transcendental phenomenology is concerned with the
human experience as it is lived with the focus of illuminating details, creating meaning, and
achieving a sense of understanding the phenomenon of interest. The findings of this study
showed that participants of the study spent two hours per day and fourteen hours per week on
Facebook; used Facebook for virtual socialization and entertainment; students were exposed
to negative emotions as a result of Facebook usage; there are worries because of the spread
of hate speeches; there is very limited experience among participants in terms of using
Facebook for their academic learning; and there is the knowledge and skill gap in using
Facebook for educational purposes. Following the findings of the study recommendation on
untreated challenges and future research has been suggested.

Distance Learning and the Right to Access to Legal Education in other Jurisdictions: Good Practices and Lessons for Ethiopia

Title: Distance Learning and the Right to Access to Legal Education in other Jurisdictions: Good Practices and Lessons for Ethiopia
Authors: Bisare, Bilate
Abstract: Open and Distance Learning has a potential to bring higher education within the reach of
those who, for whatever reason, have not had access to it and to enable those who are not in
the position to receive higher education in any other form. There are many legal frameworks
including the FDRE Constitution, which recognizes the right to education as a human right.
In Ethiopian, unlike other disciplines, except some, law schools do not have distance learning
programs. Actually, law education is prohibited in PHEIs not only for distance program but
also in both conventional and distance modes, in the country due to quality compromising
concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate distance learning vis-à-vis the right to
law education in other jurisdictions with especial emphasis on exploring best practices and
lessons for Ethiopia. The research employed a comparative study approach. The main data
collection techniques were secondary analysis of national data, relevant documents analysis
(both legal and policy documents) and literature reviews. The findings of the study revealed
that establishing Open Universities with the primary objective of ensuring access to education
through distance learning, collaborative practice of course and teaching materials
development by inviting academics from other universities in distance learning, effective and
continuous monitoring system, establishing internal quality assurance and external quality
auditing committees in distance learning programs, and strong cooperation and coordination
among stakeholders of education sectors are some of the identified best practices of law
schools in other jurisdictions. Therefore, it is suggested that in order to meet the increasing
demand of law graduates in the 21st century, firstly, the country should establish Open
Universities only for distance learning programs; secondly, public higher education
institutions’ law schools must be accredited to begin distance learning; and thirdly, legalizing
qualified private higher education institutions to resume distance learning programs in law
through serious quality assurance standards designed and effectively implemented.
